SD13 Boy Legs on SD10 or SD13 Girl Body?
10:44pm 09/02/2010
Okay, WEIRD question, I know. But I'm a crazy hybrid person, which should be obvious by now, so just bear with me.

Does anyone on here who has both an SD13 boy (relatively recent body sculpt) and either an SD10 or SD13 girl (or both, again relatively recent sculpt) have the time to show me whether or not the boy legs will fit in the hip sockets of the girl bodies? Pictures of them strung and standing would be a major plus, but even just a shot of the hip piece held together with the thigh, nor elastic involved, would be quite helpful.

I, uh, do kind of need them to not be wearing any clothes, though. At least from the waist down.

^_^;;

Overshare!
10:03am 09/02/2010
I've been feeling like a lazy bum the last three days, and not gone to the gym at all. Every time I'd think about it, I'd just be totally unenthusiastic, which isn't usual (I've been going religiously since mid-January, and loving it). But I've been headachy and just felt kind of limp, ever since Saturday.

Then I woke up this morning coughing up some nice yellow-and-pink phlegm globs, so apparently I was being ill, not lazy, and only just now realized it. Joy.

Hmm. Will see if it gets worse over the course of today. I don't want to call in sick, but I don't want to infect any helpless patients, either. (Though admittedly, the ones I deal with tend to be drunk-and-angry, not immuno-compromised-and-sad.)

EDIT: Also, the tsuba blank for my Katsushiro costume arrived a few minutes ago, much to my delight! I will have to begin planning my attack upon it, and possibly get some more metal files.

EDIT: I will not, I think, call in sick. I'm scratchy in the throat, and occasionally a clump of phlegm will simply appear in my mouth without warning, but I do not seem to be getting any worse, so it's all good. (Though if this turns out to be the beginning of tonsillitis again, I'm gonna' be PISSED.)

Wake Up to Some Skin
12:24pm 07/02/2010
  The recent activity in the "Why aren't there more lesbian doll couples!?!" thread on DoA has prompted me to get off my ass and actually take some photos of Tekla and Jackson together. I would include Aiko and Hideo in this, too, but since Aiko is currently Creepy!Legless!Torso!Girl, that just seems like it would be awkward. ^_^;;

Of course, almost all the photos I ended up taking aren't exactly DoA material, so I guess the yuri fans in the thread will just have to continue to go without.

These are definitely not work safe. )

Saya!!
03:08pm 02/02/2010
The saya I ordered for my Katsushiro costume arrived today. It's a bit scuffed in a few places, but I'm not bothered by that - I already decided that my costume is going to be more realistic and rugged than the shiny!new!anime!pretty costume style that most people at cons like to make. I prefer a more distressed look.

I think I've rambled about my approach to and views on cosplay on here before, but there's always time for the soapbox. ^__^

Basically, I see most people who do costumes going out of their way to make themselves seem as much like the target anime character as possible. If the character has bright hair with psycho spikes, so do they. If the costume always - no matter what trouble the character seems to get into - looks pristine and lovely, so does theirs. (Heck, even with characters that don't always look pristine, few people seem to try to anything other than fresh-from-the-dry-cleaner.) Bold colors and lines and borders remain such. I take...a different angle.

When I cosplay, I try to recreate the character as I imagine they would exist if they had to live in a world constrained (for the most part) by our own laws of physics. I select fabrics based on what would be most practical for a person in that character's position to wear. I design my costumes to be functional as well as to be visible replicas of the characters' outfits. If the character's features are at all unclear - for example, Katsushiro is often portrayed as having blue or green hair, in varying shades, but he has no official stats that I can find anywhere, and his hair color in the show runs the gamut from gray to greenish-brown to a dark teal to black - I will go for the options that make the character seem less fantastical and more real.

In this case, I'll be doing black hair, because I believe that Katsushiro's wildly varying hair color is a result of the artists wanting his hair to be visible against different backgrounds, and that his design actually called for black or VERY dark blackish-green hair. I'll be using very heavy and fairly stiff fabric for his jacket, because it seems most fitting since it's based on a classic military design, but the burnt-orange sleeves will be lighter, probably a knit that has better drape to it so that I can get the flow that they seem to have when he's moving about in the series. I'm going to try my damndest to find fabric that's as close as possible to hakama fabric for his pants, because even though they're obviously not hakama (they're more like clown pants, actually...), I think that they're meant to be a more modernized take one something that would fulfill some of the same basic functions - helping hide leg movements due to being so wide-legged, and giving plenty of room to move - and because it makes sense for them to be made of something durable. Katsushiro is a ronin. He has no home, he wanders from place to place trying to prove himself as a samurai in a world that is rejecting the path he has chosen to follow. He would have to carry everything he owns with him, so it makes sense that the things he owns would need to last him as long as is possible. I'm debating adding a canteen to the costume, on his right side, because it just seems...fitting...even though it's not in the original design at any point.

I always over think these things. <3

Sakura-Con
08:29am 01/02/2010
I have decided to give Sakura-Con another shot. Skipped last year due to the stupidity of my previous experience (after years of going, it's been getting more and more lame as it grows and changes), but since there's no GoGaDoll this year, I'm feeling a bit con deprived. So Sakura-Con is a go for April 2-4!

I'll be dressing as Katsushiro Okamoto from Samurai 7, the anime series based on Kurosawa's epic The Seven Samurai. I actually wanted to cosplay him a couple years ago when I first watched the series, but just didn't have the get-up-and-go needed to make the costume. I'm really excited about it now, though. I haven't decided if I'll be making and wearing his cloak, but I will be accurately recreating the undershirt, even though it's only seen a couple times in the series, and only the very edges of the collar and the ends of the sleeves (which apparently most people think are arm-warmers or soft bracers) are visible the rest of the time. ^_^ It's a very neat shirt.

So far, I've purchased the buttons I'll be using for the costume, as well as the saya and tsuka I'll be using to build his katana (I'm custom making it, using as many authentic parts as I can find that will still fit the non-traditional design, but it will have no blade, to make it easier to deal with the Sakura-Con weapons policies) and some chopsticks that I'll be modifying to make the stick for his hair adornments. I even managed to locate a tsuba blank, which is on its way to me! I'll be hand-filing it to the shape needed for his katana, since I couldn't find any with the right design online. I've found the habaki I want to use for his katana, and some fabric for the main part of his undershirt, and am currently stalking the eBay auctions for both, with have several days left to run. I've also found a faux ponytail that I think will work well - by the time the convention comes around, my hair should be long enough to pull into a VERY short high pony, which I can then add the faux one onto to get the long haired look without an uncomfortable wig. WIN!!

Okay! Enough excited ranting for now. ^__^

The Precognist: Zsuzsa in Progress (2)
03:48pm 26/01/2010
The eyes I ordered for Zsuzsa arrived a couple weeks ago. Yesterday the snakeskin vinyl for her tail came in the mail (so I'll be getting to work on actually building her tail soon), along with the metallic micropearl powders I'd ordered to do her faceup. So today I sat down and gave it a whirl. It's been a long time since I painted a doll, and I can't do realistic faceups to save my life. Thankfully, Zsuzsa's species doesn't have eyebrows or eyelashes (the only hair on their bodies is the stuff on top of their heads, and even that is very, very fine), so they paint them on, and more powerful (eg: richer) ones like Zsuzsa and Jisszhurat (and one of the baddies from the story) mix powdered metals in with their face paints (or at least, that's the current style). And that painted-on look is something I can pull off.

She's not wearing her coin belt in these - she's just wrapped in a bit of scarf - but it works well enough for now.

The more illuminated ones are under here. )

I've never used the Volks Zoukeimura Finishing spray on a head before, and it's interesting. Feels VERY weird on my fingers. The spray acted up a bit in a couple spots, and it looks like she's got some very old, subtle scarring on her face. I actually kind of like the effect, so it'll stay for now - at least, until I decide to either take another crack at her face or pay someone else to do a professional job on her. ^___^

Becoming Jane
01:01am 12/01/2010
How is it that I have never seen this movie? I love James McAvoy! (Seriously, if for some reason I was to make a movie of The Precognist, he's the actor I'd have to cast as Davlin. But, you know...ash-white-blond, and gay. With claws and hooves. Oh god the Mr. Tumnus jokes I could crack right now.) Anne Hathaway doesn't annoy me (not the way, say, Drew Barrymore does) and she's a good actress, though she generally plays roles that don't interest me. I could take or leave Jane Austen (a lot of her stuff irks me - Emma made me want to choke someone after only the first hundred pages - but some of it is...quite striking, and as a successful female novelist from a male-dominated time period, I can't help but admire her to some extent), but this movie looks intriguing.

Also, I love this song. I am debating dolly music videos right now. Maybe it's time to try my hand at stop motion again?

Or maybe that's the estrogen speaking. I'm menstruating for the first time in almost a year, so my hormones probably look very exciting right now.

Army National Guard
01:11am 11/01/2010
I am thinking about joining the National Guard. Military service is something that I have been considering on-and-off for years now, but for the past few months I have been looking at it more closely. My main hesitation comes from the fact that I do not want to completely set aside my civilian life and career. I had been favoring Air Force, but to do that, I would need to quit my job, and I could not be in ICE and the Air Force at the same time. Conversely, National Guard would allow me to do both, and because of USERRA, the hospital could not fire me for the times when I have to go do training/drills, or when I am deployed.

If I did join, I would be going into the Commissioned Officer program, not going in as enlisted. My education qualifies me for the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Of course, I would still need to pass exams and tests, but it's something I am sure I could do.

The Precognist: Zsuzsa Sketch Colored
09:52am 05/01/2010
I got bored, and whipped up a quick coloring job on the design sketch I did of Zsuzsa.

I'm kind of annoyed - I ordered the faux snakeskin vinyl for her tail on December 24th, but haven't heard anything from the store I purchased it from, and it hasn't arrived. =_=

The Precognist: Zsuzsa Sketch
12:01am 02/01/2010
I did a sketch of Zsuzsa the other night at work. I'm actually pretty proud of this one - I'm not much of an artist, so this is damned good, for me. I did use a photo of a model I found online as a reference for the position of her torso and arm.

To-See Movies
12:55pm 28/12/2009
You know, usually there is, at any given time, only one or two movies in theaters or on the "coming soon" list that I am interested in watching. Right now, that is NOT the case.

I saw The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day last night. It was excellent. I'm going to see Sherlock Holmes with [info]torimiko in just a few hours. Expect it to be epic. (EDIT: OH MY GOD IT FUCKING WAS. PLEASETOBEWATCHINGSRSLY. I have to go find some good Watson/Holmes slash to read now. Kthnxbai.) But beyond that, there's a whole slew of movies on my list that are either already out or are coming out within the next few months. Here they are, in no particular order:

List placed behind cut for courtesy. )

All Saints Day
10:54pm 27/12/2009
I was incredibly disappointed when the release of this movie back on October 30 was limited to only a hundred or so theaters on the other side of the country. Thankfully, we have an AWESOME local independent cinema here, and the proprietor managed to get his hands on a copy of the film. I went and saw it this evening. It had a few moments that didn't impress me (notably, there's this dream sequence involving Rocko that's not only surreal, and poorly placed with at best a bad transition, but also totally unnecessary), but I was highly satisfied with the movie overall. It actually exceeded my expectations. Did it rely heavily on its predecessor, The Boondock Saints? Yes. But despite my usual feelings on such things, in this case I didn't find that to be annoying - it was actually nice to be privy to the little tiny jokes and references drawn from the first movie. I'll definitely have to buy it when it finally makes it out on DVD.

Trailers for the original The Boondock Saints and for The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day are under this cut. )

Scars and Nicotine
05:12am 25/12/2009
Another short scene, written in that same fiction class almost two years ago. The assignment was to show an antagonistic character, then transition to another character and show the first one through the viewpoint of the second one. Main character is Rafe.

Killdare Lane
05:07am 25/12/2009
A short scene, written in a fiction class almost two years ago. The assignment was to...well, honestly, I don't even remember. I think it might have had something to do with deception, or with a character acting in a manner contrary to their normal behavior pattern, but I'm not sure. I don't think I've posted it on here before, and I came across it while rummaging through old folders, so here you go. Main character is Rafe.

The Precognist: Zsuzsa in Progress
01:04pm 22/12/2009
Zsuzsa is still in progress - she has no faceup, her ears are only halfway modified, and she does not yet have any body below the waist. Plus, she needs eyeballs still (I'm getting those from Van Dyke's Taxidermy Supply, but they haven't shipped yet). Nevertheless, here are a couple shots of her current state. I made the belt and wrist bangles myself, and also put all of the beads in her hair (though there are still more of those to add).

Her lower/snake half will be make using faux snakeskin vinyl and plain vinyl, in buff and cream tones, with a wire armature and an undetermined fill material (hopefully those microbeads used in squishy pillows, if I can get them). It's kind of on hold right now while I search for the right vinyl to make her underbelly, though I found the snakeskin type already.

A couple more, mostly to show her recently-completed coin belt. )

Where did it go?
09:08am 10/12/2009
For anyone, who hasn't seen it yet, a "suspected" bank robber tampered with (eg: destroyed) evidence by eating his demand note while the arresting officers were searching him.

Lesson Learned: Don't ever put any of the things you take off of a suspected criminal where the suspected criminal can reach them, even if you're "only setting them down for just a moment."

And, to honor the intarwebs: OM NOM NOM NOM NOM.

EDIT: Thinking about it, I wish I could be on the jury that gets to sit and watch that video in court, as part of the evidence. SO HARD NOT TO LAUGH. Judge would have to call for order. LOL.

OMG Laptop
05:11pm 03/12/2009
My new laptop is here, and it's so shiny. I'm getting used to the glossy surfaces. Really like the responsiveness of the keyboard (the keys have a good bounce/spring to them). Screen is good, getting used to the quirks of Windows 7, and slowly getting my default programs (Mozilla, NoScript, VLC, K-Lite, BitTorrent, etc) installed on the beast and things set up the way I like them. I still need to get a lot of my files (mostly pictures and word documents) and programs (like my copies of Adobe CS) transferred over to this machine from my old laptop, but I'm making progress. Once I've got that done, I can set about removing the busted screen from my old Toshiba and seeing about setting it up as a desktop(-ish) home computer.

Trying to decide if I want to install Word/Microsoft Office, or just use Open Office. I'm leaning toward the latter. Also need to go snag myself a copy of AVG Free, before I forget.

Also debating the pros and cons of setting up a TOR relay on this laptop. I wouldn't permit it to function as an exit node, because I'm not comfortable with that, but I'm interested in offering my bandwidth to the network. Unfortunately, I'm not sure a laptop, using as it does variable bandwidth, would be an appropriate TOR relay.

Oral Board
06:51am 02/12/2009
Well, wish me luck. I've still got to shower and get dressed, but after that I hop in my car, swing by some random fast food joint to acquire breakfast, and then spend a few hours driving down to my oral board interview for the IEA position this morning.

EDIT: I passed! Thank you everyone who wished me well. ^__^ All the positive vibes and finger crossing and good thoughts seem to have done the trick.
