Darryl goes to confront Talon, things do not go as expected.

The fact that the beginning of their relationship is a bit rocky probably really doesn't surprise anyone who knows them.Collapse )

Status Report
01:19pm 06/11/2013
Just a small status report, since I know I've been pretty quiet for some time now. I've been a little active on Tumblr (reblogging things is easier than composing; you just click what you like), but haven't been around on the doll forums much and haven't been posting here on my journal. I also haven't been able to make eyes since last fall, due to some health issues which I will explain below.

It turns out that I have epilepsy, probably post-traumatic. (Remember when I got hit in the head repeatedly while working at the hospital, the final time being when my partner and I broke up that gang fight in the Emergency Department lobby in August of 2011? Yeah.) But it's hard to determine the exact cause, especially since my seizures didn't start immediately after the injury (it took them several months to begin, which actually isn't unusual, and also might be partially due to the fact that the doctor I saw after the injury put my on an anti-convulsant for off-label treatment of nerve pain in my neck...which might have suppressed any seizures I would have otherwise had at the time). But I digress...

So anyway, I have epilepsy now. I'm on medication for it, which is resulting in some fun side effects. The most annoying one is the aphasia. Yep, my speech is a bit off - the wrong word comes out, or the come out jumbled (either the letters within the word or the order of the words within the sentence, both happen). Especially if I speak too quickly. Also, my typing is all messed up. It's like I've become dyslexic, which is super fun (especially given that I'm in the process of trying to get into grad school for English Language & Literature right now). The aphasia is also anomic, which means I should probably look into getting a thesaurus app for my phone before I go nuts.

In other news, James and I now have a dog (we got him almost three weeks ago). He's a rescue, a Plott Hound/Doberman mix, about 5 months old (almost 6 now!), and his name is Oswald (we call him Ozzie). He's adorable, and he's eaten two of my shoes so far. He's also a poop machine. Amusingly, I can't smell his urine (another fun side-effect of the medication I'm on). So if I think he has pissed inside (he has the occasional accident when he's over-excited), I have to ask James to check to see if it's dog pee or just water, because I can't tell the difference.

Tumblr

I was bored, and as is so often the case, this led to mischief. I have given in to the swell of technology and joined tumblr.

Unstructured Meanderings of an Insatiable Mind

I have resisted this trend until now, because I am wary of the casual approach to content ownership that "reblogging" promotes. However, I believe that to truly understand something, one must participate in that thing, and that censure without experience is pointless. So I delve.

Also, setting up my theme was fun.

Your Input On A Project Is Sought
08:05am 09/09/2012
If you read this journal, you probably know about Ǝrəšiš, my custom creation. A LOT of hours of work went into making this girl. She was created for the 2011 Uncanny Dreams doll art show in Seattle, WA, as one of my display pieces. I hand-worked every part of her. Of all of my dolls, she is truly "mine."

Since then, she has been incorporated into the sign for my Innamorata Eyes display when I attend conventions as a vendor.

I've had many people approach me and ask to purchase her, both at the conventions and online. Of course, she isn't for sale, and never will be. I'm very attached to her. In fact, she even has more than one mirror! (So that she can "change outfits," so to speak.)

However, spurred on by how many people love her, I've recently decided to make a second mirror ABJD and offer it for sale. I have already acquired the mirror that I am going to use, and it is gorgeous - heavy, solid metal, and brass-plated, with an ornate border and beveled glass.

My dilemma in this project is threefold:

1) I'm torn on whether I should offer this as a complete custom doll, made to someone's specifications (up to a point - I would, for instance, be willing to incorporate a head that they already own, if it were compatible with one of the bodies that I have here to work with, but would not go on a hunt for specific head XYZ if they wanted it), similar to how I made Ǝrəšiš for myself (eyes made to their specifications, wig made or customized to their desires, jewelry made based on their suggestions, etc), or whether I should simply make a doll that follows my own vision.

2) If I do make a doll that follows my own vision, rather than allowing input from the person who will eventually own it, should I make it male or female? I have the parts here for both, and both would be equally fun and challenging for me.

3) And finally, if I follow option number two, and make the doll without any input from the future owner, should I make it as a full custom (wig, custom urethane Innamorata Eyes, possible outfit/adornments, and head with faceup), or should I let the person who eventually owns it choose their own head (perhaps a floating head that they already own), and just make the body/adornments/perhaps wig, and perhaps offer Innamorata Eyes of their choice with it?

I'm really not sure which of these would be best. All of them could be very enjoyable for me. I really just want to make sure that whoever ends up bringing this doll home will love how it turns out, because I will probably never make another mirror doll again - they just take too much work. I'm trying to figure out which one of the permutations above would best ensure that.

A Darryl [& Talon] Retrospective
10:28am 07/09/2012
I've been meaning to put this together for some time, despite how embarrassing it is for both me and for poor, poor Darryl. I mean, really, I'm going to be trotting out photos of his earliest resin shells, from back in the days when I could barely work a camera. But I think it's interesting to see how he has evolved over the years, and how my skill has evolved, both as a photographer and as a doll owner. I chose Darryl for this project for two reasons; he is both my oldest doll (I had other dolls before him, purchased in 2003, but those have completely moved on), and also one of the dolls that I own that has gone through some of the most significant transitions while still remaining recognizable as a permutation of his original self. Because Talon also features so prominently in many of my photos of Darryl, this retrospective focuses somewhat on him, as well. SO! Carry on my wayward son, there'll be peace when you are done.

Circa February, 2005. This image is from one of the first sets of photos I took of Darryl, when he was fresh out of his LE Kohya box from Volks. His default LE faceup was summarily stripped off upon arrival (I don't think I even photographed it), and I replaced it with the clumsy, no-less-effeminate-but-at-least-slightly-less-day-glo one seen in this photo. Talon is also seen in this picture, despite being purchased well after Darryl, because his secondhand hybrid parts (Volks F-16 head, old Souldoll body) arrived before Darryl did. Talon is sporting probably the worst faceup I ever slapped onto a doll, and we're not even going to talk about the materials I used. Remember, this was back in the days shortly after DoA came into being in its present (forum) form, and information on these dolls and how to work on them wasn't widely available. It's amazing I didn't stain him.
The rest of the photos in the retrospective can be seen under the cut.Collapse )

Darryl Gets INKED
08:12am 29/08/2012
Darryl is back (or at least, Darryl's torso and left thigh are back) from a sojourn in Ireland with the inestimable hane, who made my descriptions of his dragon tattoo a vivid reality. His parts have actually been here for about a week, but I've been giving them a "no-chipping-or-wearing-off" treatment using painted-on coats of clear polyurethane resin (the same resin I use in making my eyes), so I haven't been able to assemble him until now. This tattoo is completely permanent. It will not wear off. In fact, all of the tattooed pieces have been sanded to remove (most of) the glossiness from the urethane coating, so that should give you an idea of just how durable it is. I may give them a hit of MSC or Zouk's spray in the future, just to matte up the parts where there are dips in the sculpt that were hard to sand and that still retain some shine, but I don't know if I'll bother. (I really hate the texture of spray coatings like MSC.)

So without further ado, I give you...Darryl's dragon tattoo.

Three more photos under the cut - warning for nudity.Collapse )

Eyes For Sale! 12mm & 10mm
06:03am 29/05/2012
Information about my eyes can be found here. All of my eyes are hand-made by me in urethane resin. I use premium quality materials.

Note that in some of these pictures, some of the eyes appear to have pupils that are not round. That is due to the angle of the photo and the light refraction in the dome (like when you put a straw in a glass of water and it looks like the straw is bending). All of my eyes have perfectly round pupils, which are themselves domed. This gives the eyes more depth and a "following" quality not seen in eyes with flat pupils.

Some eyes have bubbles, but unless they are obtrusively placed, very large, or there are lots of them, I don't discount for that. Bubbles are almost never visible when the eye is in a doll. If the eye has more than one or two very small bubbles, they have been noted in the description, and bubbles that I consider objectionable have been taken into account in the pricing.

All of my 12mm eyes are $45 per pair and all of my 10mm eyes are $40 per pair, unless marked otherwise.

Shipping is $6 domestically for up to 10 pairs of eyes. All eyes come packaged in black plastic double-walled jars to protect them from light when in storage and to protect them during transit.

Please PM me or eMail me (maxwellsdemon02@yahoo.com) if you are interested in purchasing any of the eyes shown here. Eyes are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Eyes for Sale! 16mm & 14mm
11:08pm 27/05/2012
These are stock from the convention that didn't sell, so I'm offering them online. I will also be listing some 12mm eyes and a small number (4 pairs) of 10mm eyes within the next day or so. (If you would like to purchase some of these 16mm or 14mm eyes, but think you might also like some of the 10mm or 12mm eyes, just let me know and I will reserve your selected 16mm/14mm eyes for you until the 10mm and 12mm eyes are photographed and I have them posted for you to peruse.)

Some Experimental Eyes (Both Unfinished, Obviously)
02:48am 12/05/2012
These 16mm eyes were experiments. I'm pleased with how they're turning out.

And these 12mm eyes are "Special Editions." They'll be priced a bit higher than my usual eyes, as the materials are a bit more costly and slightly harder to work with. They contain natural moonstones. It was hard getting a decent picture of them. These photos still don't do them justice. The moonstone pupil isn't visible until the light hits it. These are the kind of eyes that will look cool in photos, but that really have the most impact in person, since they change and move with the light.

Both pairs will be stock for my booth at the convention in Poulsbo, WA, on May 26th.

A Good Day
11:59pm 25/04/2012
It was a good birthday. I basically slept all day, which is always nice. However, in the morning hours before sleeping, I finished making the multi-eye master mold for my 10mm eyes, so now I can cast more than one eye at a time. Of course, it's just the first step in the long eye process, but it makes that step a lot faster when it's producing six eyes (or more, if I use multiple molds) per pour instead of one. And I've spent the evening casting 10mm eyes. I'm almost out of white resin, though. It looks like I'll have to order more before the convention, if I want to have the 100 pairs I was hoping to offer.

I spent yesterday evening making velvet bloomers for Tsura. I still need to finish putting the trim on them - ran out, had to order more - but they look good, even so. Between that and all the eye stuff, I feel productive.

I am currently eating Taco Bell. This is also rewarding.

Even MORE Eyes!!
11:18am 20/04/2012
This is (most of) the rest of the last batch of eyes, which were doming yesterday. (I can only dome seven pairs at a time, because of space restrictions.) They're not quite done, obviously, and one or two of them have minor imperfections, but I like them. They'll all be added to convention stock.

The domes on the pink ones turned out too tall, which make them hard to position and magnifies the pupils a lot (it's why they look so big), so I'll have to fix that.

The teal 14mm ones on the lower left will probably be discounted, because one of the pupils ended up off-center. Despite that, they're gorgeous, and if they're positioned correctly you can't tell. I might also be able to correct it by reshaping the dome a little, but I'm not sure.

More Eyes!!
06:16am 19/04/2012
These are some of my most recent eyes. Most of them are stock for the upcoming doll convention in Poulsbo, WA. They're not quite finished (the domes on them just finished curing), but at this stage, they're far enough along to give an accurate idea of what they'll look like when they're done.

Some Eyes
08:48am 16/04/2012
Here are some eyes I've made.

This is a prototype eye. I was playing around with a junk cast sclera (ran out of resin and didn't have enough to fill all my molds, so this eye has a hollow back/no stem) and the idea of foiling an iris instead of coloring it. I think it turned out pretty interesting. It does have some fairly annoying bubbles, but I wasn't being very careful when I made it, since it was just an experiment. It's a 16mm eye.

There are some more pictures under here.Collapse )

Life, the Universe, and Everything
10:20am 12/04/2012
Life here has been a bit of a whirlwind. The medical stuff has been...rough. Cut for long-winded exposition of my recent medical situation.Collapse )

In other news, I think I've solved the bubble problem I was having with my eyes. I built a vacuum chamber (James helped with the hole-drilling I needed), and was very confused when my completely bubble-free resin seemed to spontaneously develop bubbles during it's curing process. Most sources online seemed to maintain that the bubbles were there in microscopic form despite the steps I had taken to remove them and my inability to find them with a flashlight and magnifying glass, and that they magically expanded when the resin hardened. Not satisfied with this explanation, I did some research on the actual chemical composition of polyurethane resins, and I learned some very interesting things. Notably, that curing the resin in areas where the humidity is too high or the temperature is too low will result in a change in the chemical reaction that causes the resin to harden, and will cause the resin to off-gas. While this off-gassing isn't a problem in the earlier stages of curing, once the viscosity of the resin has become high enough the gas being released will become trapped inside, which forms bubbles.

We happen to live in a humid climate, and the daily temperatures here are low from late October through the end of June, sometimes even into July.

A bit of research into localized humidity control methods and the judicious application of a space heater and I'm watching some test eyes (made with junk casts from cleaning my master molds) cure that appear to be almost entirely bubble-free. Since they were testers, I wasn't as careful with them as I usually would have been, and there are a few bubbles in them that I introduced myself. But there don't seem to be any spontaneous "magical" bubbles so far, which is a very good sign.

In other other news, I'm reading Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow's The Grand Design, and thus far it is highly entertaining.
